Digbeth Dining Club Delights

Until recently I was a Digbeth Dining Club virgin and now I can proudly say that cherry has been well and truly popped! A gathering of delightful treats, taking inspiration from the whole globe, ready to over-indulge on? Yes please. They are a multi-award winning event originating from Birmingham with multiple partnerships in food, culture and music - all the perfect ingredients for a grest day out that's yum in your tum.

Find out more about them and where you can find them next at www.digbethdiningclub.com

My fellow food lover and friend, Harriet, and myself attended their latest event at Severn Social in Shrewsbury which despite the rain had a great vibe with a constant atmosphere that could quite easily take you from afternoon eats to late night drinks. There were so many different vendors, all refreshingly from different backgrounds and influences; every stall had their own unique offering meaning no one would go hungry.

First stop was a cocktail (of course) provided by the lovely guys at Severn Social and then we delved into the belly of the best (literally and figuratively).

Dim Sum Su

Crispy Beef Bao and Taiwanese Chicken Bao

These were precious, fluffy steamed buns of joy. I rammed my mouth full of crispy beef and Harriet (in a slightly more lady-like manner) enjoyed the chicken.

Lots of spring onion and Sriracha mayo kept the taste bright and powerful against the heavier meat and the light milk-white bun. If I was being super picky I would have just liked my beef just a tad more crispy to give more contrast in texture but I would definitely go back and so should you.

Baked In Brick

Chicken Kiev Burger

Yes you read that correctly. A chicken kiev in a burger - why have we not thought of this before?! So simple, so beautiful.

Quite literally baked, to order, in brick so super fresh, juicy and oozey. Comes topped with blow torched welsh rarebit and Chimichurri and a super soft home made bun.

This was ridiculous and I will 100% be recreating this at home. Be warned that when you bite in there will be squirting in all directions (steady on...).

This was a special and they had some flatbread chicken wraps and burritos which looked delicious but I do hope when you get to order from them they still have this burger as I'm not sure if they can really beat it - although I'm sure they are up for the challenge and I'm happy to taste test!

Press De Cuba

El Cubano - Cuban Sandwich

Have you ever watched the film Chef? Basically it will make you hungry for two hours and in particular hungry for Cuban sandwiches. I am ashamed to admit I had never actually devoured one of these before but my gosh I will again. I feel like it was so simple: there's no tricks, smoke or mirrors but just a really yummy sandwich.

Mojo marinated pork shoulder, honey glazed ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and sweet mustard. DO NOT judge this as a ham and cheese sandwich as it couldn't be further from that lunchbox throwback.

One of the best parts was the bread - this sandwich literally gets pressed and toasted so all the flavours are pushed and merged together and surrounded by frickin good crispy bread. The crunch of that was super satisfying and reminded me that all sandwiches should be encased with proper good bread else you're really just kidding yourself.

Pimp My Wings

5 Lemon Hussey Buffalo Chicken Wings with Waffle Fries

I LOVE chicken wings and I could nibble on them everyday so a trip to Pimp My Wings had to happen. Also, waffle fries were an unexpected and FANTASTIC addition. Why are waffle fries not more of a thing?

Anyway, back to the wings. These were coated in a traditional Portuguese sauce with a mild chilli flavour and a hint of lemon. I would probably change the wording on the menu from a 'hint' to 'a lot' of lemon as these were a little too far on the sour side. However, this meant the flavour was strong but not just a typical spice like you usually get with wings.

The meat was super juicy and easily slurped off the bone (horrible imagery I know but slurping chicken off the bone really is the best way to eat wings).

They had numerous different flavours which went up to a four chilli spice rating for those amongst you brave enough. For reference these had one chilli rating and had a mild warmth on the lips.

I couldn't quite manage the desserts they had on offer that night so I will save that for my next visit to Digbeth Dining Club, along with all the new and exciting foods they will bring. As it happens Severn Social is being graced again with Digbeth Dining Club round two on Saturday 19th May.

My advice: skip breakfast, wear an expandable waistline and don't plan on driving home as if its not from the drink you will most likely get food drunk (yes that is a real thing).

Love, Rachael x
